This case study of 18 reporters in one state capitol delves into the role of competition in the production of news. The concept of peer competition is explicated and presented as another norm in the journalism profession. Data were gathered using participant observation and in-depth interviews. Reporters were found to compete with each other on a regular basis and named competition as a major motivator in their work. Reporters also were found to cooperate on minor matters of news gathering and formed a social bond creating their own work community.
