Abstract/Summary:
This study reflects the author's interest in the experience of mindful exercise and coping with racism in the African American community. Heuristic methods and procedures were used to research this experience. The literature review discussed the terms African Americans, racism, coping, mindfulness, and exercise. The data, derived from the experience of 10 co-researchers, revealed the following themes: (1) mindful exercise as a stress reducer, (2) institutional racism, (3) social racism, (4) emotional impact (anger, frustration, and sadness), (5) confronting racism, and (6) spirituality. Results included that engaging in mindful exercise had a positive effect on individuals coping with racism. Co-researchers spoke to how their coping strategies helped them manage themselves when they were affected by racism. Co-researchers also discussed how their individual faith allows them to keep moving forward in life and remain positive when dealing with racism. Implications reveal that mindful exercise has a significant effect in reducing the stress of racism; therefore, it will be necessary to examine how this can be further applied in future research.
