Abstract/Summary:
The study is organized into seven chapters. The first two chapters include background information and biographical data on Mr. Copland. In chapters three and four, both operas are analyzed from the perspective of performance by listing performers required, necessary orchestral personnel, a synopsis of the story, staging possibilities and problems, representative music examples which typify Copland's "style" and material which can be easily excerpted for performance in workshop settings. In chapters five and six, The Second Hurricane and The Tender Land are examined in more detail with regards to Copland's use of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Chapter seven summarizes conclusions concerning Copland's compositional techniques and unique "sound" in addition to the "performability" of these works for opera companies and college opera programs. By studying Copland's operas in this fashion it is hoped that readers of this study will be inspired and encouraged to pursue additional contact with Copland's operas through performance and study.
