Abstract/Summary:
Sexual addiction, a disorder characterized by problematic sexual behaviors that lead to significant adverse consequences, is thought of as a disorder of intimacy. What fuels and maintains the disorder is an impaired ability to engage with others in a manner that is reciprocal and satisfying. At the root of this issue is an insecure attachment, which develops from a child's relationship to primary caregivers early in life. These attachment styles, classified as secure or insecure, give rise to expectations about the responsiveness and consistency of important others in meeting basic needs. From these early patterns come generalizations about relationships that continue throughout life, including adult romantic relationships. Attachment styles influence interpersonal relationships in myriad ways. A person's attachment style can shape how sexual behaviors are expressed, hinder the expression of intimacy, and affect the susceptibility to shame. With attachment in mind, this dissertation illustrates how acceptance and commitment therapy can be used in the treatment of sexual addiction in conjunction with specific recommendations tailored to this population.
