Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship between United States and Japanese commodity export patterns to Newly Industrialized Asian Countries (NIC). Specifically, country differences and types of commodities were used to explain comparative indices of exports from the United States and Japan to a given set of ASEAN countries.; This research was based on prior work performed by Gardner, Nie and Mehta (1993) and utilized (1991-1993) commodity export data obtained from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).; Referencing prior research, it was hypothesized that the use of commodity categories and country differences (operationalized as export volume differentials) would be a valid means of explaining a comparative index of export as well as identifying inter-country trade patterns.; Based on a three-year (1991-1993) data comparison of 33 (export) commodity categories, the results of this study revealed that a comparative index of export and associated trade patterns can be effectively developed using various commodity categories and country difference variables.
