Abstract/Summary:
The focus of this dissertation is the strike activity of French workers in general, and the impact of the French Communist Party on strikes in particular. The period considered is 1920-1990. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, a number of hypotheses are developed and tested which focus on the role of economic and political variables in helping to understand strikes in France. The conclusions of this study point to the value of utilizing both political and economic variables in studying strikes. The conclusions also provide support for arguments which have viewed the French Communist Party as an important device for mobilizing discontent. It is the strength of the Party's presence in society which has accounted for most of its impact on strike mobilization.
