Abstract/Summary:
Despite growing numbers of students learning English as an additional language attending U.S. middle and high schools, few programs exist to meet their needs. Two-way bilingual (TWB) education is one model of bilingual education that aims to prepare high school students to live and work in increasingly diverse communities. There is a dearth of research about educational program for students learning English as an additional language at the secondary level and virtually no U.S.-based research on two-way bilingual programs. This dissertation is unique in its investigation of students who have been in TWB programs since kindergarten. As such, this is the first study to examine long term (K–12) two-way bilingual education. It also introduces a new theoretical framework and presents 28 findings with implications for secondary-level educators supporting students learning content and language bilingually.
