Abstract/Summary:
This study examines and evaluates the internationalization effort of selected members of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Specifically, this study is designed to measure the extent of internationalization within each AAU member institutions and to identify any relationships between selected institutional features (geographic location, size, number of foreign scholars, number of minority students, revenue per FTE student, and expenditure per FTE student) and the degree of institutional internationalization. Data required for this study are available from different sources: the Institute of International Education (IIE), the Modern Language Association (MLA), the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the U.S. Department of Education, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, USAID Yellow Book, the Foundation Center, and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).; The study sample includes the 59 American universities that are member institutions of the AAU (two Canadian universities were excluded). In this study, factor analysis is used in measuring the extent of internationalization within each AAU institution and analysis of variance and correlation analysis are used to identify any relationships between selected institutional features and the extent of internationalization. Factor analysis produced two dependent variables: the degree of internationalization and the international grants. The findings showed that the extent of internationalization within each university varied substantially. The size of the institution, the number of foreign scholars, and the number of minority students significantly correlated with the degree of institutional internationalization though geographic location, the institutional revenue and expenditure have no correlation with the degree of internationalization. The study also showed that the number of foreign scholars has a positive relationship with international grants, while geographic location, size, number of minority students, the institutional revenues and expenditures, have no relationship with international grants.; The findings from this study can assist university administrators and educators to develop and evaluate strategic plans and better allocate resources to the internationalization of their institutions.
