Abstract/Summary:
The current research examined if children and families with ADHD could be treated effectively with a family systems group therapy model. The group therapy model combined filial therapy, structural family therapy, and cognitive behavioral strategies. The objectives of the study were to improve knowledge of ADHD, reduce parenting stress, and improve family functioning and social skins.; Sixty-two families Participated in this nonequivalent pretest-posttest control study. Additionally, there were 62 families participating as the control group pre/post. The parents completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Conners' Rating Scale - Revised: Short form (CRS-R:S), and the Family Satisfaction Scale (FSS). Additionally, the children completed the Family Satisfaction Scale (FSS) and the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS). During the group sessions the children and families met for a play interactive session to practice the skills learned in their groups. Each family had homework during the week to practice the skiffs learned within the groups.; The results suggest that treating both the parents and the child is beneficial in reducing conflicts within the home. As a result, ADHD children and their families can have improved family relationships and feel more satisfied with their lives. Thus, parents will be more effective at assisting their ADHD children with developing the necessary skills to be self-assured healthy adults.
