Abstract/Summary:
This demonstration doctoral project explored the psychological issues facing athletes following athletic injury. More specifically, this project resulted in the development of a manual for athletic coaches. In order to develop such a manual, literature in both the clinical and sport psychology fields was reviewed. The first draft of the manual was distributed to author's doctoral project committee for review. The feedback received from the reviewers was then be compiled and integrated into the final version of the coaches' manual.;Athletic injury is a source of great stress for dedicated athletes. Inherent in injury is a sense of loss, as well as powerful emotions such as frustration, anxiety, and depression. These feelings are often stronger when an athlete's sport participation and prowess define his or her identity. Despite efforts to protect athletes, injury is a common event in sport, and is therefore important to better understand. Furthermore, a coach's reaction to an injury is highly influential in the manner in which the athlete copes with an injury. As such, it is vitally important that coaches gain an understanding of the diverse and complex psychological issues facing athletes after injury. This manual was designed to further educate and guide coaches while working with their injured athletes.
