Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the relationship between social influence and sport commitment within the sport of triathlon. The subjects were 40 club member and 40 non-club member triathletes. All subjects completed the Triathlon Sport Commitment Model, which was used to determine sport commitment among the two groups. The Triathlon Sport Commitment Model proposes that sport commitment is determined by sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities. Greater sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities are predicted to lead to higher levels of sport commitment.;The General Linear Model was used to determine if club members and non-club members differed significantly on the selected variables of sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities. No significant differences were found between the two groups.;For both club members and non-club members, a significant relationship was found between the criterion variable of sport commitment and the predictor variables of sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities. Multiple linear regression findings revealed that sport enjoyment and involvement opportunities were the dominant predictors of sport commitment for both groups. Together, the variables of sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities accounted for 63% of sport commitment variance for club members, and 71% of variance for non-club members. Social constraints was the only variable found not to have a significant relationship with sport commitment. Overall, although no significant difference was found between club members and non-club members on the variable of sport commitment, a significant relationship was found between sport commitment and the predictor variables of sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities for both club member and non-club member triathletes.
