Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine factors that contribute to the job satisfaction of academic administrators---presidents, chief academic officers and academic undergraduate deans at four-year historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and to investigate the level of job satisfaction among this group of administrators. The variables of interest for this study were the independent variables which were the administrative positions held, and demographic factors; the dependent variables were intrinsic, extrinsic and general satisfaction factors as measured by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ).;The MSQ and a demographic questionnaire containing two open-ended questions were mailed to presidents, chief academic officers and academic deans at 85 four-year HBCUs for a total of 340 academic administrators. Four mailings occurred which resulted in the return of 213 surveys or a 63% return rate.;The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics by frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, content analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey Post Hoc follow-up. The level of significance and follow-up was .05.;The findings of this study showed no statistically significant difference between presidents, chief academic officers and deans relative to overall job satisfaction, intrinsic satisfaction and extrinsic satisfaction as measured by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. However, there was a statistically significant difference when factors of each of the satisfaction scales were looked at individually. Significant difference was also not found between demographic factors and overall job satisfaction.
