Abstract/Summary:
Hospital Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding is associated with decreased patient safety and poor quality of care, especially at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) which operates at 150% of capacity. Hospitals such as KNH can use industrial engineering techniques to optimize operational efficiency by identifying and mitigating impediments to efficient patient flow. As part of this dissertation, I have combined the principles of Lean, Change and Project Management, Balanced Scorecard and Experiential Learning to create the teaching materials necessary to promote distance-learning of Lean principles so as to measure, improve and sustain operational efficiency in KNH's ED.
