Abstract/Summary:
Purpose of the study. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a glass ceiling exists for women among banking and financial institutions in Thailand. Moreover, the study might reveal the extent of discrimination against women, if any, at all levels of management among banking and financial institutions in Thailand.;Research questions. (1) Is there any relationship between certain demographics---age, gender, educational level, and length of time at the institution---and attitudes toward women as managers in selected banking and financial institutions in Thailand? (2) Is there a difference, with respect to wages and promotional criteria, between men and women at the lower, middle, and upper management levels working in selected banking and financial institutions in Thailand?;Research methodology. The study employed a descriptive design. The instrument was a self-designed questionnaire, which delved into information regarding individual's gender, age, education, longevity, wages, career opportunities, and promotional criteria within selected banking and financial institutions in Thailand. Data were collected from 276 individuals, 131 men and 145 women working at lower, middle, and upper management levels within selected banking and financial institutions in Thailand.;Results and conclusions. Research Question 1: The results showed that age and educational level were the demographics that reflected differences between men's and women's attitudes toward women in the banking and financial sector. The older the respondents' age, the lesser degree of accepting women in the institutions. In addition, the higher the respondents' educational level, the more consensus on their attitudes toward women managers.;According to the study's results, gender and length of time at the work place of respondents did not indicate big differences on the attitudes towards women in banking and financial sector in Thailand.;Research Question 2: The results from the data analysis indicated that the higher the management level, the more apparent men's wages and promotional opportunities were higher than those of women. Yet when considering the promotional criteria, gender was a minor factor for both Thai men and women working in banking and financial institutions.
