A modified form of Hooke-Jeeves method is developed for solving both the optimum design and operation problems of extractive distillation columns.;For interlinked extractive distillation columns, the effects of make-up solvent ratio and recycled solvent ratio on product purities and energy consumption were also investigated.;In the design of a new column, the lowest number of stages is determined for a specified separation at a given reflux ratio. For an existing column, the lowest reflux ratio is determined for a specified separation at a given total number of stages. It was found that a non-optimal feed location not only can reduce the product purities but also increase the energy consumption. |
