Resonance electronic Raman scattering in rare earth crystals

Abstract/Summary:
The intensities of Raman scattering transitions between electronic energy levels of trivalent rare earth ions doped into transparent crystals were measured and compared to theory. A particular emphasis was placed on the examination of the effect of intermediate state resonances on the Raman scattering intensities. Two specific systems were studied: Ce;In Ce;Electronic Raman scattering from Ce;In addition to the measurement of relative electronic Raman scattering intensities, values for the absolute electronic Raman scattering cross-sections were obtained through a calibration of the collection efficiency of the detection system using standards with known scattering cross-sections.
