Abstract/Summary:
An investigation into the analysis and design of propulsion systems employing side-exhausting scarfed nozzles was conducted. An axisymmetric, method of characteristics performance analysis model for scarfed nozzles is presented. The results of an extensive parametric study generated by the performance model is presented. The results of this study demonstrate the influence of nozzle geometric parameters on the performance of scarfed nozzles. A simple one-dimensional performance analysis model is presented. Comparions between the results produced by the one-dimensional model and those produced two-dimensional model are presented. Comparison between performance predictions and experimental data are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the two-dimensional model and the limits of its ability. A second parametric study was conducted to evaluate the application of scarfed nozzles in propulsion systems. A scarfed nozzle design methodology based on this second study is presented.
