It is unknown to what extent our nations' leaders, policymakers, regulatory agencies, advocates and others will be capable of systematically addressing the staggering health care issues of our nation in the 21st century. The evolution of health care over several decades and its continuous challenges and accomplishments are significant. From the rather simple system that existed in the 1700s with the use of simple remedies and traveling physicians with minimal training to a more multifaceted, bureaucratic system in the 21 st century. The emergence of the healthcare discipline in the 21 st century, renders it complex and diverse. This is apparent through the integration of endeavors and challenges such as health insurance, uninsured and underinsured citizens, health maintenance organizations, disease management, advanced technology, health care reform, and accountable care. However, the health care industry and health care consumers are desperate for viable solutions to solve for the multiple challenges it faces. There are noted dramatic changes such as visible manifestations in the projected escalating percentages of healthcare costs as a percentage of GDP, increased medical costs, reduced access to care and poor care coordination. This demonstrates the continued vulnerability of this discipline and the complexities of the healthcare delivery system. Thus, cohesion of the health care delivery system and its successes is predicated upon components such as competent leadership, collaborative care management, determining organizational factors and managing the execution of established strategic goals.
