Abstract/Summary:
Research conducted regarding sex offenders has suggested that beliefs held by those who work with this population can have a significant impact on treatment and rehabilitation. Negative beliefs held towards sex offenders are highly persuaded by the media and therefore, stereotypes tend to develop. Research also suggests that having information regarding this population can positively influence beliefs of sex offenders. This study examined beliefs, stereotypes and information or lack thereof, towards sex offenders held by probation officers and the public. Analysis revealed a significant difference in probation officers' and the public's opinion of sex offenders in regards to prior information determined from the pretest and post-test scores after taking the Attitude Towards Sex Offenders scale. Probation officers reported most positive beliefs and demonstrated greater awareness when compared to the public. Although both groups reported a difference on the pretest and posttest, the public's beliefs differed significantly on the posttest when compared to probation officers' posttest scores. In addition, there was a significant correlation found between positive beliefs and information. Training and education should be carefully evaluated with individuals that plan to, or currently work with sex offenders as it can have an effect on treatment and rehabilitation.
