Abstract/Summary:
What would learning for discovery look like? This study is concerned with facilitating the discovery process. Discovery can not be guaranteed but abilities related to the discovery process can be strengthened. This study looks at the question of how you prepare people to face the unknown. In much of traditional education a student learns something which someone else already knows. In learning for discovery a facilitator must help the learner when the answers and even the questions are not known.;The approach to learning for discovery which this study takes is called anticipatory learning. Anticipatory learning is made up of a collection of skills and abilities designed to facilitate the discovery process. The critical component which anticipatory learning seeks to develop in the researcher is pattern recognition abilities. This is accomplished through the use of intuitive thinking and metaphorical thinking.;Anticipatory learning develops intuition through the use of meditation, relaxation, and visualization skills. It is also developed by expanding the person's information base, and through the design and use of Rapid Evolution Envelopes. There are two particular forms of metaphorical thinking which are used in anticipatory learning. Metaphors which emerge from general systems thinking and aesthetics are especially useful for enhancing pattern recognition abilities.;Anticipatory learning also develops the abilities of empathic understanding and collaboration. The development of empathy enhances traits of imagination and tolerance of ambiguity. The proper collaboration can create a synergetic relationship for all the people involved. They will be able to do more as a group than they could as individuals.;Anticipatory learning is designed to facilitate the discovery process. As a global community we are beset by many problems and many opportunities. Our greatest resource lies in the creative potential of human beings. Anticipatory learning offers one avenue in which creative potential may be utilized.
