Abstract/Summary:
This study traces the role of sport and leisure in the American Jewish community, as well as the contributions to these areas by American Jews.;The major portion of data was gathered from Judaic sources including histories, encyclopedias, sociological research, archival material, newspaper and magazine articles, memoirs, correspondence, and other secondary and primary sources. Most of the research was conducted at The Ohio State University library and the Hebrew Union College library in Cincinnati.;Although there is little evidence which might indicate that sports holds any special place in the American Jewish community, or that Jews have made any significant impact on the world of sports, Jews, nevertheless, enjoy sports participation like anyone else. Despite their small numbers (Jews comprise approximately three percent of the general population), they have been well represented in all levels of sports. Since the turn of the century there have been a number of successful professional Jewish athletes, coaches, and front office managers, many of whom are described in the study.;As a major review of literature each chapter in the study examines a different aspect of Jewish life in America and the role of sport and leisure, therein.
