Abstract/Summary:
Considerable research has been conducted on incivility in nursing. However, few studies have specifically investigated nurses' opinions on incivility's influence on learning. Limited research has been done on incivility's impact on nurses' ability to learn in clinical settings. Incivility often leads to poor relationships, unfavorable nursing student experiences, and poor patient safety outcomes. Much of the literature has focused on incivility in the workplace and the negative outcomes of uncivil behaviors. For the purposes of this research, 47 participants (mostly Caucasian females) completed the survey on influences of civility on learning in the clinical setting. Two instruments were used for data collection: Civility, Respect, and Engagement in the Workplace (CREW) and Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire-II (CWEQ-II). Descriptive statistics revealed that 47 participants perceived that civility was present in their respective organizations. Civility in the workplace presented opportunities for learning and feeling appreciated by the organization. Limitations of the study included the small sample size, lack of male participants, a convenience sample, survey length, and use of a third party for email distribution. Implications for learning include ensuring that nurses continue to have an environment most conducive to learning and developing enhanced skill sets promoting camaraderie among clinicians and students. Future research should replicate this study and examine using effective interventions for learning in the clinical setting.
