Abstract/Summary:
Dorchester County, Maryland: An Interdisciplinary Study for Young People is a chronological integration of Dorchester County's historical events, geographical relationships, sociological factors, economic considerations, anthropological discoveries, and political science contributions. This study has been geared to provide youth in the upper elementary and middle school grades with reading materials in the field of social studies about their cultural heritage in order to extend and enrich their understandings and appreciations of the unique, colorful, and diversified life styles found in the County.; This study traces the historical background of Dorchester County from its earliest beginnings in Europe, Asia, and Africa to the 1982 development of the Cambridge Creek project, an effort by community leaders to revitalize the area. Maps, drawings, and photographs have been included to strengthen the content for young people. The geographical setting of the County is established first in order to show its effect on the economic, social, and political life of the people as they moved from a dependence on tobacco to the more diversified agricultural-aquacultural economy of today.; Dorchester County, Maryland: An Interdisciplinary Study for Young People is based on four years of newspaper research and writing for The Daily Banner about life in Dorchester County. Over two hundred full-page photographic essays about the social, economic, and political life of the County provided the background for this present research. This study, designed to meet the need for school-oriented materials for youth, has involved a trail of research from the Maryland Hall of Records to the carefully-preserved collections in the Dorchester and Talbot counties' libraries and even into the private collectors' specialized library collections.
