Abstract/Summary:
For the purposes of assisting educators in planning art programs and articulating art courses between junior colleges, senior colleges, and universities, this study examined the records of art students (N = 514) who graduated between 1976 and 1980 in Alabama with a bachelor's degree in art from six universities. An analysis of academic achievement as measured by quality point average (QPA) in art courses at graduation was presented for three groups of art students, (A) junior/community college transfer students = 60, (B) senior college transfer students = 101, and (C) native university students = 353. Results of a comparative analysis of QPA showed that there were differences in QPA in art courses for groups A, B, and C that were significant, p = < .05. A QPA level greater than 1.4 and less than 2.5 on a three-point scale was attained by 56.6% of group A, 47.6% of group B, and 65.8% of group C. The mean QPA for all students was 1.9.;Art courses completed by the art students in groups A, B, and C were categorized by the researcher into 25 different art studio categories and 44 art lecture categories. After the most frequently completed categories of art courses were ranked and compared, it was suggested that a model program of art courses could be designed for art students in a baccalaureate-oriented program of study.;The number of credit hours in art courses completed for a bachelor's degree in art were compared to the number of credit hours required in art courses for the degree as stated in university catalogs to determine whether art students completed additional credit hours above the bachelor's degree requirements. Varying amounts of credit hour differences in art courses were significant for groups A, B, and C, p = < .05. Results showed from one to 48 semester hours in art were completed above catalog requirements for 64.4% of the students.
