Abstract/Summary:
Leadership training has traditionally been for adults. In recent years, youth and adolescents have was included in leadership training. Leadership training for adolescents and youth can have a profound effect on enhancing non-cognitive skills. The problems are that many adolescents lack the necessary skills needed for solving problems, self-esteem, and communication skills. As assessment of perceptions of training for the development and enhancement of these "non-cognitive" skills such as communication, self-esteem and problem-solving is a cost-effective approach to increasing the quality and productivity of the workforce. The purpose of this qualitative embedded case study was to explore the perceptions of participants aged 20 and above who previously participated in an adolescents' leadership training programs. Eight former adolescent leadership participants partook in this qualitative embedded case study. The participants were requested to participate in an interview on their perceptions of the leadership training and its relationship to solving problems, self-esteem, and communication skills. The findings showed that adolescent leadership training was essential in the career path of the individual. The findings also revealed that the training that one goes through significantly contributes to the development of the leadership skills of the individual hence their value in the job market. The findings also show that the leadership training and skills the individual has acquired makes him or she prepped for immediate employment. It also prepares him or her for offering leadership with an organization at various positions. Finally, the findings serve as a reliable leadership training goes beyond the accusation of skills for work experiences. It also models the intangible traits of the individual by changing attitudes, self-esteem and communication techniques.
