Abstract/Summary:
The benefits associated with a higher level of education are many and varied. Numerous studies support the claim that highly educated individuals tend to contribute more to society than they take and that a college education plays a significant role in escaping poverty. Despite these benefits, admission to colleges and universities tends to be skewed with ethnic minorities admitted at numbers that are significantly lower than demographics would predict. Previous studies have shown that the SAT places the most important limitation on eligibility for high school graduates who meet most, but not all of the University of California's admission requirements. This study sought to examine those criteria established for college admission with an emphasis on the use the SAT as a standard given the existence of the wide and persistent gap in test scores when comparing White and Asian students to students who belong to racial/ethnic minorities.
