Exploring the experiences of logistics supervisors' perception of their supervisor's leadership style in enhancing collaboration

Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore the experiences of logistics supervisors' perception of their supervisor's leadership style in enhancing collaboration amongst their counterparts throughout the Pacific Rim in locations under the Naval Logistics Command Pacific umbrella. The specific problem assessed was what factors contributed to the enhancement of collaboration and the situations in which the supervisor's actions inspired collaboration. A qualitative case study design was used to align perceptions, situations, and concepts. This design allowed for this type of assessment and afforded the stoutness and rigor by conducting interviews with 10 out of 12 logistics supervisors assigned to the organization. The inductive analysis which explored in detail how participants made sense of their personal and social world, via semi-structured, open-ended interviews, addressed the theories, concept, and literature regarding, the situational approach to leadership, and in particular the perception of the transformational leadership style. Data triangulation and the deductive reasoning approach clearly concluded that during situations in which the supervisor exhibited the transformational leadership approach, collaboration was enhanced. Additional research for further study is recommended queering another organization in Western countries in which an individualistic society and a feminist perspective may solidify these findings or may have different results based on the society or the feminist perspective in an organization in which females share leadership roles.
