Abstract/Summary:
The Problem. The aim of this research was to determine the extent of agreement on designated management functions, attributes and skills among engineering and non-engineering managers within an aerospace company in Southern California.;Method. A structured questionnaire collected opinion data from 65 engineering and 44 non-engineering managers. Respondents' perceptions were quantified and statistically analyzed to determine the level of competency required to fill managerial positions and the current adequacy of their seniors' managerial training in designated managerial functions, attributes and skills.;Results. Results of the study indicated that engineering managers believed that a higher level of competence in planning, leading/directing, controlling, and general administration was required for managers, than did the non-engineering managers. Non-engineering managers, however, believed that a higher level of competence in organization, interpersonal relations and administration was required for managers, than did the engineering managers. It was also found that non-engineering managers believed that their present seniors required a higher degree of training and skills enhancement in planning, organization, leading/directing, interpersonal relations and controlling, than did the engineering managers. Also, non-engineering managers believed that their seniors required more training and skills enhancement in administration and general administration, than did the engineering managers.;Two research questions were designed to test the perceptions of such engineering and non-engineering managers as to the extent to which they agree on the level of competence needed, and the adequacy of their seniors' training, in designated management functions, attributes and skills.
