CHINA'S OPEN DOOR POLICY: DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS IN FUJIAN PROVINCE

Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the history of international business in Fujian Province, China between 1979 and 1985 under China's open door policy, an outward-looking policy concerning foreign economic affairs representing the post-Mao Chinese leaders' desire to transform the country's economy through expanding international trade and utilizing foreign resources.;The research investigates the evolution of Fujian's international business during 1979-1985 from both technical and geographical perspectives. It covers (a) the development of foreign trade, foreign investment, import of foreign technology, and other international commercial activities, and (b) the progress of foreign investment in the major areas where Fujian carried out its international business, Xiamen Special Economic Zone, open city Fuzhou and its Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Southern Fujian Economic Open Zone.;Findings of the research suggest that through the development of international business, Fujian's economy has been enlivened and its pace of development has been quickened.;An assessment of the outlook of international business in Fujian Province is made and the implications for the U.S. business community from an international marketing perspective is considered. This is achieved through analyzing Fujian's 7th Five-Year Plan with an emphasis on the area of international business, Fujian's environment for further development of international business, and the implications for the U.S. business community.;The research examines the environment of Fujian Province, the background from which Fujian international business developed during the 1979-1985 period, and three current factors, the evolution of government policy, organizational setting, and infrastructure construction.;Fujian has been a most important test area of the open door policy and what has happened in the province is perceived to be the epitome of the policy. The main contribution of the dissertation is that it has examined the phenomenon comprehensively and increased the knowledge inventory of China's open door policy.;The dissertation is also a piece of essential and important literature to help the U.S. business community gain a better knowledge of China's open door policy so as to make better decisions in its future business dealings with China in general and in Fujian in particular.
