The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand front-line managers' leadership perceptions of promoting self-determination in the lives of individuals, which surpasses the sole role of managing group home operations and individuals' lives. In order to study front-line managers' perceptions, three qualitative data sources were collected. These included 20 individual interviews, five focus forums, and researchers' field notes associated with the interviews and focus forums. The data were transcribed, categorized, and analyzed using constant comparative method, which allowed themes and subthemes to emerge from the data. Examination of the current study's themes indicates that participants viewed their front-line managers' roles as encompassing tangible functions and intangible attributes in performing the responsibilities of the position. The functions of front-line management described explanations of the competency requirements of the position; however, the emergent findings suggest that their self-described management attributes coincide with leadership practices and principles. The participants' perceptions of their functions and attributes scarcely described the principle of promoting self-determination as a function or mindset of front-line managers. This study produced three implications that could be relevant to administrators of residential agencies in considering modifications to policies, training curricula for front-line managers, and practices of managing individuals and group homes. These implications are presented to generate thoughtful reflection of the potential influences this study could have on enhancing the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities.;Keywords: leadership, front-line managers, self-determination, intellectual disabilities, competencies.
