Le Corbusier was a famous architect in the 20th century and a major advocate of the modern architectural movement. The vast majority of existing research on Le Corbusier focuses mainly on the design aspects of his architectural accomplishments. This dissertation strives to explore the deeper meaning by looking at his artistic thought and philosophical approach to his work.He occupies an important position in the history of architecture. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to study his artistic thoughts and explore his valuable creative experience and theoretical viewpoints.Based on the existing research, this paper analyzes Le Corbusier's creative process, summarizes his artistic thoughts, and extracts the basis and core of his thoughts. The introduction presents the purpose, significance and existing research concerning my topic.Based on the proceeding tasks, the author employs research content and methodology to establish a research frame for the dissertation. The second chapter comprehensively analyzes Le Corbusier's creative process.Three stages of Le Corbusier's design process and thoughts are discussed;the accumulation stage of creation prototype, the establishment stage of creation idea and the deepening stage of creation style. Each stage analyzes the factors which influence the art form, combining his works to explore the development of its art ideas. This chapter also addresses Le Corbusier's ideological basis of "humanism",discussing the meaning, core, purpose of Le Corbusier's "humanism," and the relationship of his art thoughts as they correspond to the three needs of people;the physical and spiritual demands for architecture, and the social demand for cities.Chapter three systematically discusses Le Corbusier's thought that "the house is a living machine" from three aspects of construction concept, construction system and construction mode. This chapter focuses on people's physical demand for architecture.Through the construction of a humanized scale of accommodation,to meet people's living needs, and to adopt a new spirit of architecture appropriate to the trend of the times.By creating a domino system to reform the load-bearing structure of buildings, the space and design principles and types of modern buildings were established.Through standardized and quantified construction methods, the concept of "precision first" and "economy first" was realized, resulting in the universal ideal of building "palatial" houses for all the people.Chapter four systematically discusses Le Corbusier's thought that "architecture is pure spiritual creation" from three aspects of architecture shape, space and conception. This chapter focuses on people's spiritual demand for architecture.By referring to the pure geometric modeling of classical architecture and the control of datum line and proportion, the architecture shows a noble aesthetic feeling under the observation of order.Le Corbusier introduced the concept of time into architecture,so that the viewer could walk in time and space to experience the beauty of his surroundings. The integration of painting, sculpture, light, color, visual acoustics within architecture produces "ineffable space",which makes poetic architecture express emotions.Chapter five discusses Le Corbusier's thought of "urban planning committed to creating happiness" from the three aspects of unified order, poetic settlement and glorious city ideal, and focuses on people's social demand for cities.Unified geometric order and functional order enable people to obtain spiritual freedom.A poetic material environment and humanistic environment bring people basic happiness. The glorious city concept embodies Le Corbusier's ideal of exploring the harmonious relationship between man, nature and the universe and seeking happiness for all mankind.Chapter six expounds the important role of Le Corbusier's artistic thoughts in promoting the development of modern architecture from three aspects: the influence on international style, design organization, and modern architecture in other countries and regions. The conclusion of the paper explains the concentrated embodiment of his artistic thoughts--"the poem of right angles" summarizes the core of Le Corbusier's artistic thoughts, and discusses the influence of his thoughts to contemporary architects from the two aspects;the responsibility of architects, and the source of architectural forms.
