Urban planning history of Tianjin is studied by using historical and urban planning methodologies in this dissertation. This research includes two clues. The first is a direct clue, that is key urban planning events bearing urban development and urban space evolution of Tianjin. In this clue the physical planning is taken as the major part while the planning as embodiment of government functions and policies is taken as the auxiliary part. The second clue is a hidden clue, that is comprehensive comparison of urban planning in China and in western countries based on background and impact of urban planning events so as to study the planning thoughts behind the planning activities.This dessertation consists of six chapters. Chapter I is an introduction, which gives an overview of urban planning history in China and the status quo of urban planning research in Tianjin based on the necessity of historical study of urban planning and the research background of Tianjin's urban development, and demonstrates the significance of taking urban planning history as the research theme, as well as the framework and innovation of this paper. Chapter II discusses traditional Chinese urban planning stage (1404 to 1859), and brings forward that the traditional Chinese urban planning thoughts are characterized by recreation restricted by formularization. The thoughts of Rites of Zhou, emphasizing standardization and orderliness, became the philosophical source of formularization. Guided by the philosophy of rules and order, there was a general standardized planning manner, under which urban planning became a recreation according to local conditions such as natural geographical conditions and social customs of the city planned, fully reflecting the integration of controlling and flexibility. Chapter III discusses implanting stage of modern urban planning thoughts (1860 to 1948), and introduces, taking the examples of Yuan Shikai's "Planning of Hebei New Area" (1903) and Liang Sicheng and Zhang Rui's "Construction Plan for Tianjin Special City" (1930), the efforts of Chinese in urban planning in such an implanting period. Chapter IV discusses the stage of preliminarily localizing modern urban planning thoughts (1949 to 1984) and Chapter V discusses the stage of further localizing (1985 to this day). These two chapters mainly study the planning background to demonstrate the localizing process. Chapter VI summarizes the evolution of urban planning thoughts in Tianjin, from recreation restricted by formularization to planning development driven by individual forces, then to planning tendency determined by political situations, and finally to urban planning guided by government policies. Chapter II briefly introduces the origin and historical development of Tianjin city, and divides the urban planning evolution course of Tianjin into several periods according to the characteristics and turning points of historical evolution of urban planning thoughts in Tianjin.
