The real place not only contains the physical space,but also is the carrier and object of the conceptual and intellectual imaginary space,and carries the image representation in the daily life experience.Exploring different aspects of place through“the conceptual triad of production of space” is helpful to understand the holistic and dynamic place.It is helpful for various social subjects to realize the difference of different perspectives in place studies.The diachronic change of the physical space of Chongqing main urban districts and people’s image and its correlation are the research objects of this paper.The core research scope focuses on chongqing main districts,and the study was conducted after1997.The theoretical objects are mainly the evolution of physical space,the place image in the professional field(representations of space)and the place image in the multi-dimensional perspective of the non-professional field(spaces of representation).This paper analyzes the correlation between physical space and place image and tends to “holistic” interpretation.On the theoretical level,through the discussion of “existence and representation”,“subject and object” and “space and place”,combined with“the conceptual triad of production of space”,this paper forms a theoretical basis for the discussion of the relation between physical space and place images.As the entity“text” of the built environment,the physical space is interpreted by different subjects to form multi-dimensional place images.It is necessary to study the evolution of the physical space from the perspective of positivism,and at the same time to study the place images of different subjects in a certain level from the perspective of humanism,and explain them in combination with structural social transformation.Thus,this paper can be related to abstraction and concreteness,structure and empiricism,and form a“holistic” place explanation.The research on the physical space of Chongqing main districts includes the expansion of built-up areas,urban land use,evolution of important physical space elements,spatial form and texture.Spatial analysis of satellite remote sensing data and current land use data was carried out through GIS spatial analysis method.Various statistical yearbooks reflecting the physical space elements are analyzed by statistical methods.In addition,building density,plot ratio and texture analysis are combined to form a multi-level research on the evolution of physical space.The research content of place image in the professional field includes the transformation of important cognitive viewpoints in planning texts,discourse transformation,the relationship between element prediction and change of physical space,the comparison between expansion of built-up areas and planned construction land,and the cognitive image of experts in the professional field.Qualitative analysis and discourse analysis are used to study the text of the overall planning of Chongqing.The relationship between the elements prediction and the change of physical space is analyzed by statistical method.The physical space(the boundary of the built-up area)was compared with the planning drawings by GIS spatial analysis method.Several experts familiar with the development of Chongqing main districts were interviewed through interview questionnaire.Various materials were used to reflect the place images in the professional field.The research content of the place image in the multi-dimensional perspective of the non-professional field includes the place image in the text,the place image in the perspective of daily life,the place image in the perspective of travel,the place image of taxi drivers and the place image in the network society.The existing system of place image theory is supplemented through the study of multiple subjects,multiple angles and multiple materials.The research materials include news texts,relevant literature works,interview materials and image map materials,relevant propaganda materials,online comments,and online image materials,etc.Combining qualitative analysis method and statistical analysis method,the existing place image theory system is supplemented through multi-subject,multi-angle and multi-material research.This paper summarizes the internal relationship between the physical space and the place image,describes the relationship between the content of the place image and the intersubjectivity,and discusses the organization mode of the place image and the association mechanism of the physical space.It also introduces the interpretation of sociality and explores a more “holistic” view of place.The empirical analysis of Chongqing main districts combined with theoretical speculation is helpful to promote the research of physical space and place image,and a more holistic explanation approach is formed:(1)Through “the conceptual triad of production of space”,this paper deeply analyzes the relation between physical space and place image,and forms a more holistic understanding.Collective place image is not only regulated by physical space,but also the product of individual specific conditions and experiences,and also influenced by the general social and cultural theme.The transformation of social production not only affects the production and transformation of physical space,but also affects the transformation of collective concept,forming a transcendental background.At the same time,it will have an impact on the knowledge concept of the professional field.It is necessary to associate the political and economic fields with the fields of daily life,and pay attention to the mutual relations among the sociality,physical space and place image in terms of hierarchy,dynamics,control elasticity and interactive feedback,so as to explore a more holistic view of place development.(2)This paper excavates the place image content and the organization way,the deep mechanism of “the filter” is explored to explain the transformation process from physical space to individual place image.The content of place image mainly includes cognition of urban physical space change,spatial preference,place attachment and collective memory.Different image contents show different subject differences.The relationship between hierarchy and difference can be explained by the pyramid theory of individual needs.The place image mainly includes three organization modes,including narrative form,map form and theme structure.The thematic cognitive mode is the key to the formation of place images.Subject and object,perception and synaesthesia,as well as direct denotation and connotation are important factors in the construction of “filter”.The change of physical space has more influence on the instantaneous perception and the process of direct denotation.Meanwhile,the signification and emotion of place are more influenced by subjectivity,synaesthesia is also influenced by the filtering and selection of the subject,thus forming a complex correlation mechanism inside the filter.(3)This paper reveals the multi-level evolution process,characteristics and pattern of the physical space of Chongqing main districts.The physical space is characterized by expansion,growth and unbalanced group development.Urban land use has undergone a transformation process from incremental development to inventory optimization,and shows the evolution trend of “great dispersion and group integration”.All kinds of physical space elements are growing rapidly.The overall spatial form shows the development trend of high plot ratio and“multi-center-periphery” structure.The dynamic mechanism of physical space development is explained in a novel way,the key of which lies in the penetration of space production system from the whole country to the place.The local government satisfies the demand of macro system reform through the innovation and reform of the space production system,and at the same time seeks for “policy difference” within the system rules.The implementation plan for the improvement of the " two-river and four-shore " in Chongqing main districts shows the correlation between the unbalanced development of physical space and the imaginability of different regions.In the future,the development of physical space is no longer just a quantitative expansion and growth,but a complex space production process formed by the association of complex elements such as social psychology,place image,social capital and cultural capital.It is necessary to take a holistic view of the complex relations and deep logic behind the development of physical space in the future.
