A Study Of Female Image In Medieval Poetry

The research results on women images in the Medieval poems were abundant, however, the discussed issues were mainly on typical women images analysis, the explanation on cultural significance and thought significance, and focused on the women images in Palace Poems. In this thesis, the research space in the above field was thought to be expanded. The significance of women images research in the Medieval poems should not only limit on the reveal of content illustrated above, but also could be expanded to the male literati psychology and pursuing on literal aesthetics which were implied in the female phenomenon. The study on elaborate female description methodology, which was not sufficiently recognized, was especially demonstrated in this thesis.I will discuss women images in the poems of medieval century from four aspects, with the standpoint of macro and micro visions. Firstly, The cultural background of women images. I will start with ancient marriage institution, discuss woman's place in the family and society, and demonstrate male mentality of medieval century. Secondly, Personality characteristics of women images in different themes. Women images in medieval poems are divided into threes themes, including marriage, society, and pursuit. Relevant poems are analyzed respectively. Thirdly,The relationship between women images and the mentality aesthetics of male literati. Women images embody not only loyal and virtuous quality approved by the Confucian codes, but also sensatory beauty enjoyed by male. Finally, The details of women image description, including ornate diction, image types and idiomatic word.
