Metropolitan Shanghai was functioned both as the physical space for film and the space factor that affected film culture throughout the earlier period of the Republic of China.The dissemination of Intellectual ideas,public participation in political activities,effective administrative system and the vigorous development of mass media all had formed and shaped Shanghai film culture.The process of urbanization boosted the popularization of mass media,and the public awareness of citizens stimulated the transformation of cultural market operation mechanism.Modern consumptive society provided a fertile ground for the growth of film newspapers,works and ideas of filmmakers and critics who acted as consumer leaders were penetrated into citizens’ daily life,and dominated the orientation consciousness of readers.Film from the earlier period of Republic of China was an essential part of mass communication environment where filmmakers,critics and publishers were connected.Earlier film-related activities were reconciled with publishing market operation mechanism which was required by the urbanization of Shanghai.The development of film journals had created a field for the growth of film culture on which participant was all constricted to reach a certain kind of compromise.This thesis focused on the journals’ public communication for films of the earlier Republic age.Communication Studies which analyzed the combination of film journals and film culture was added to early historical film research,and explored the constructive and communicative functions of film journals.And on this ground the thesis expounded the effect to film itself that was caused by the discourse space of film journals.Chapter one elaborates the joint formation of morden Shanghai and film journals between the 1920s and 1930s.And this chapter was marked by media attribute and develop environment of film journals,film journals and the public prosperity,construction of the field of literary production and the characteristic development of film journals.Chapter two focused on communication mechanism of film journals and issue setting.The first part discussed public premote mass media prosperity,and the communication mechanism of film journals.The second part exposed the relation between filmmakers and press publishers,of which the editors,a highly complex group played not only as an opinion leader but also a gate keeper.The last part analysed the penetration of multiple discourses into films,and the expansion of film discourse space.Chapter three explained the contest for discourse space of film journals which was the vital part of the thesis.This part included the conflict between Zheng Zhengqiu’s Consciousnessium and commercial discourse,The film magazine and revitalization movements of Lian Hua,and the confrontation between soft and hard films.All these had witnessed the birth and growth of film discourse space throughout this period of time.Besides above,this chapter analysed the party politics intervention to film journals ideology of the 1930s as well.Chapter four excavated the relation between critique and development of film art.And this chapter analysed the significant effect of criticism to the art of film,and to the direction of directors.The last part concluded the forming cause of multiple discourses criticism and cultural power play behind it.Conclusion:manufacturing model of film journals and film communication mechanism characterized"the overall social rights",which was the game among multi-consciousness,and the conflict between commercialism and political discourse.Along with the contests and conflicts,various forces competed consciously for discourse space,and expanded the communal film discourse space unconsciously by the same time.
