Wang Chang(1724-1806),whose given name is Defu and who styled himself as Shu’an,was born in Qingpu,Jiangsu province,he was a famous specialist of epigraphy and litterateur in Qing Dynasty.Major works could have lists as Jin Shi Cui Bian 160 volumes,Hu Hai Shi Zhuan 46 volumes,Hu Hai Wen Zhuan 75 volumes,Guo Chao Ci Zong 12 volumes,Ming Ci Zong 12 volumes,Chun Rong Tang Ji 48 volumes,etc.Jin Shi Cui Bian(The Compilation of Epigraphy),pressed in Qing Dynasty,has catalogued about 1,500 works of stone inscription during the Past Dynasties in China,which possibly takes the representation for works of Wang Chang.According to the time order,the recorded cases have been dispersedly extracted in those calligraphy annotations and other inscriptive writings of the epigraphy study,enclosed with the textual research and some comments of the editor in table.JinShi Cui Bian(The Compilation of Epigraphy)definitely plays a momentous role in the development history of epigraphy.Firstly,the book collects those cherished rubbings in the Past Dynasties,which gives priority to stone inscription,offering much convenience to the subsequent research or criticism.Second,the sequels and supplement books oriented towards this compilation are emerging from many directions,which is expected to create up the building of contemporary epigraphy.Jin Shi Cui Bian(The Compilation of Epigraphy)and its sequels and supplements,are not only helpful to review its academic value,but also beneficial to grasp the whole history of epigraphy in Qing Dynasty.This paper emphatically discussed the book as an academic classic,as a research paradigm for further investigations.The main body in this paper is composed of five chapters.First chapter is an overview of the Wang Chang,listing his life routine,main writings,friends,and the background of compilation on Jin Shi Cui Bian.The biographical information was made on the basis of the epitaphs,stone inscriptions on the tomb side and other biographies.Without the complete comprehension on all details,this paper was supposed to investigate his personal academic research and epigraph collections.The study on background knowledge,which contained the successive epigraphy research on Qian-Jia era in Qing Dynasty(1736-1820)and origin relations with WU&WAN schools,is a focus of the study of this chapter.The second chapter inspects the compilation of Jin Shi Cui Bian.Firstly,this paper has examined the background that the epigraphy share the prosperity with contemporary economy and culture of Qian-Jia era(1736-1820),when the amount of epigraph works upgraded to 100 as much as possible.No matter what the depth of its communication and length of the travel time have cost,the value and impact of epigraphy in Qian-Jia era(1736-1820)have been obviously gigantic.Secondly,these main editors contained Zhu Wenzao,Qian Dong,Wang Tao,Tao Liang and Peng Zhaosun,etc.This paper would concentrate on personal role and their own academic expertise.Finally,the overview of its characteristics respectively covers the catalog,storage,release,textual research and other aspects.The third chapter inspects the reference documentation and quotation.The reference is seemingly weaving all kinds of works,containing 255 monographs,12 single works,87 annotations,etc.Perhaps,these extensively utilized materials contained OuYang-Xiu’s JiGuLu,Zhao Ming-cheng’s JinShilu,Weng Fang-Gang’s Liang Han stones,Qian Da-xin’s Qian Yan tang Jin Shiwen Ba Wei,etc.Meanwhile,this paper examines the amount,surname,system,relevant evaluation and clerical features of its quotations and references,even including its litterary characteristics and contribution.The fourth chapter inspects the sequels and supplement of weaving Jin Shi Cui Bian.On details,those continued works varied more than 20 kinds,and this paper summarizes these followed 13 pieces of work,whose vital paper was emphatically selected aside,containing the HuangBenJi’s Jin shi cui bian bu zheng,Luo Zhenyu’s,Jin shi cui bian JiaoZiJi,Liu Zengxiang’s Ba qiong shi jin shi bu zheng and other works.Therefore,this paper would reorganize the routines on the development history of epigraphy in Qing Dynasty by an accurate investigation on Jin Shi Cui Bian.As a regular academic research,the main staves of epigraphy in Qing Dynasty could be expected as Gu Yanwu,Sun Xingyan,Weng Fanggang,Qian Da-xin,Wang Chang,Lu Zengxiang and etc.Perhaps faintly,the compilation of Jin Shi Cui Bian has resonated and resurfaced the relevant study and repaired those appropriate works to the fame’s,which is supposed to contribute to the structural construction of the Qing era’s epigraphy.Followed with the fourth chapter,the fifth investigation concentrated on the epigraphy study of Jin Shi Cui Bian in Qing Dynasty.Firstly,this paper researched its contemporary printing and version.In some cases,the focus topics have been focused on these compiled version due to its clear printing system.Then,the communication of the book has also been well introduced in this paper.Lastly,this paper deduced that the compilation of Jin Shi Cui Bian laid the basic pattern of epigraphy in Qing Dynasty for its impact in the contemporary research.
