Fashionlization has been a typical phenomenon and significant trend in the history of Chinese contemporary art's development. This paper teases out a fourphase developmental history of the course of Chinese contemporary art's orientation towards being fashionable,on the basis of several delineated notions related to this phenomenon. After outlining the course of development of Chinese contemporary art's fashion-orientedness on three levels,i.e.mass dissemination, convergence with commerce, and brand establishment, the text summarizes the features with which this faddishness is manifested. In doing so,it analyzes the specific effects brought about by this trend of development, including the emergence of celebrity artist, the expansion of the artistic niche as well as the diverse permeation between art and fashion. It can be argued that the development of Chinese contemporary art's faddishness is somewhat inevitable. As for an analysis of its formative causes, these specifically include influence of cultural policy, the workings of the Chinese and foreign art markets as well as the interwovenness of art and fashion. Moreover, through a reverse observation of the requirements and demands that fashion poses on Chinese contemporary art, this text reveals three aspects that have given a considerable boost to the burgeoning faddishness of Chinese contemporary art, namely the temporal context of consumer society, the yearning for art among the urban middle class, and an internal demand within the fashion industry. This paper builds on the above to elaborate on the conclusion that fashionlization is inevitable for the contemporary art in China.
