National image is an important part of national soft power. It also reflects the comprehensive national strength. It is important to improve C-E translation of political discourse for global communication in order to transmit favorable national image worldwide. Therefore,it is of high theoretical and practical significance in national image transmission to study C-E translation strategies of political discourse for global communication from the perspective of national image. With China's increasing national strength and national leverage,it has now evolved into an international focus and played an important part in international affairs. So China has received world-wide attention and the information about China is much needed.Under the circumstances China has carried out the strategy of "Chinese culture going out" and improved international publicity, which has boosted China,s image abroad. However, since China has possessed very limited international discourse power, its image has always been created by "others",who has used the strong discourse privilege to demonize China.Because of the countless biased reports and deliberate misinterpretation of China's policies from western media, the international community is still harboring deep-rooted prejudices against China, which has affected their understanding of China,s image. Therefore,it's important for Chinese people to transmit China's image in order to introduce China as an oriental country with culture, responsibility and socialism to the world, which will help the world develop a more comprehensive and objective understanding of China. At present, there have been some problems in China's discourse for international communication.Among the problems, the unacceptable expressions are mainly responsible for the ineffective transmission of China's image. To transmit China's inage successfully,we need to develop the discourse for international communication which will facilitate foreigners' understanding and reflect Chinese characteristics as well.C-E translation for global communication serves as an important tool to develop the discourse and plays a vital role in increasing the international community,s understanding of China, demonstrating contemporary China's image and developing China's national soft power and international discourse power.Political discourse is a key element of China's discourse for international communication.Among C-E translation of all publicity materials for global communication, translation of political discourse has a more direct effect on China's image.C-E translation of political discourse is an important phrase in developing the discourse for international communication. It is quite necessary to improve C-E translation of political discourse to achieve the international recognition of China's image.Translation strategy plays a decisive role in choosing translation methods, the use of which will be closely linked to the quality and acceptance of the translated text.Different choices of translation orientation will result in quite different translation quality and transmission effect of China's image. For a long time, scholars hold different views when it comes to the problem of whether C-E translation of political discourse should be target language oriented or source language centered. Therefore, this study will start from the analysis of the characteristics of C-E translation for global communication, the research status quo and main problems of C-E translation of political discourse. With the theory of national image as a main theoretical basis of this study,we explore the role of C-E translation of political discourse in transmitting national image to the world and the reasonable translation strategies based on the strategy of developing the international discourse merging Chinese and foreign features proposed by the Party Central Committee. As a result,we suggest:(1)the translation should be target language oriented when it comes to language use and source language centered in dealing with discourse content especially the cultural and political connotation;(2)the two translation strategies should be integrated into the whole translation process, which is justified. In addition, some methods of integrating the two strategies in translation are analyzed as well.In order to make the analysis more convincing, some examples from XI JINPING THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA are analyzed, which shows that the integration of the two translation strategies will make the translated text transmit key information typical of China and facilitate foreigners' understanding and acceptance, which will develop China's image and soft power and promote communications between China and other countries. Then some methods and models of integrating the two translation strategies are summarized. This dissertation consists of the following six parts:The dissertation begins with an introduction, which mainly summarizes the research background, questions, significance, methods, originality and organization.Part one mainly focuses on C-E translation of Chinese political discourse for international communication and its status quo.The part starts from the analysis of some terms in C-E translation for global communication, and then elaborates the characteristics of C-E translation for global communication, such as accuracy and flexibility, sense of politics, audience centeredness and national uniqueness. Therefore,on one hand,we need cater to language habits and thinking patterns of foreign audience and use idiomatic expressions and acceptable language for them;on the other hand,we should keep certain political standing and transmit cultural uniqueness in translation, which justifies the translation strategies proposed later in this dissertation. In addition,We give a definition of Chinese political discourse and analyze the status quo and common problems in C-E translation of political discourse for international communication. Finally, the status quo of C-E translation strategies of political discourse is also analyzed. It leads to the findings that influential researches in this field are few and the problems such as confusion in concepts and the unclear conditions for the use of a certain translation remain to be solvedPart two mainly focuses on national image and C-E translation of Chinese political discourse for international communication. This part begins with the analysis of the theory of national image —the theoretical basis of this dissertation. The connotation and characteristics of national image as well as the positioning of China's image are mentioned. Then we discuss the role of international communication in transmitting national image based on the situational home and abroad and introduce the status quo of transmitting China's image to the world We proceed to analyze the significance of C-E translation of Chinese political discourse for international communication in transmitting national image, which is leading to the subject of this dissertation. Finally,we propose that it is necessary to adopt the source language oriented strategy to reflect the Chinese uniqueness of the translated text and the target language oriented strategy as well in order to make the version readable and it is important to balance the use of the two strategies to realize the integration of the two strategies and improve the translation efficiency.Part three mainly justifies the integration of the two strategies in translating political discourse from the perspective of national image and analyzes the relationship between ensuring accuracy and acceptability of the translated text and developing national image as well as the relationship between keeping the cultural connotation and political position of the source text in translation and national image. This part points out that the integration of the two translation strategies will realize the objectives of introducing China as well as its uniqueness to the world and facilitate foreigners'understanding, which is in line with the requirements of international communication. It is also important to promote Chinese discourse system for international communication and transmit China's image.Part four analyzes some examples from XI JINPING THE GOVERNANCE OF HINA to explain how the integration of the two translation strategies in C-E translation of political discourse for global communication is closely related to national image transmission and how to combine the use of the two strategies. In this part,we first make a brief introduction about the book and its international influence, and then explore the relationship between translated texts and nation image development.Next,we proceed to analyze some examples from the book to figure out how the strategies are reflected and integrated in the translation from Chinese to English in order to make the version accurate, idiomatic and acceptable and reflect the political and cultural uniqueness of the source text as well as the leader's discourse feature.Part five is a conclusion of the study. It reviews the major points of the dissertation and points out the limitations. At the end, some suggestions on how to proceed with the related research are put forward. In this study we adopt many research methods such as literature review, statistic treatment, induction, case study and contrastive analysis and combine qualitative and quantitative analysis. This dissertation gives equal weight to argument elucidation and analysis of translated examples.Qualitative analysis plays a major role while quantitative analysis,as a complement, plays a supporting role. With both macro-theoretical perspectives and micro-translation methods, this study attempts to present a comprehensive and objective analysis of the strategies in C-E translation of political discourse for global communication from the perspectives of developing the discourse system merging Chinese and foreign features as well as transmitting China's image. It will not only reduce and avoid translation problems as well as make the translated discourse more acceptable, but also promote the transmission of China's image and reflect Chinese uniqueness, thus developing the discourse system merging Chinese and foreign features. The study is of practical and strategic significance since it transcends simple code switch in linguistic sense and covers some broader perspectives such as power discourse and cultural transmission?...
