Along with the deepening of globalization,China has increasingly become an indispensable part of the international community.In the process of international communication,translation for China’s global communication,with its significant impact on political,diplomatic and commercial activities,is essential to the improvement of China’s national image and the enhancement of China’s international influence.In addition,given the fact that national publicity films reflect the employed methods in global communication,the source and the target texts can thereby be typically classified into the communicative texts.Consequently,intertextuality,as one of the important criteria of communicative texts,demonstrates an intimate relation to the translation of commentaries of national publicity films.In view of this,the present thesis,taking Fairclough’s intertextuality theory as the theoretical foundation and the translation of commentaries of national publicity film Perspective as data,aims to propose an analytical framework appropriate for studying the translation for China’s global communication,and to probe into the effective ways of translation,thus facilitate telling Chinese stories well and thereby show a true,diverse and integrated image of China to the world.The significance of the thesis resides in the fact that it can inject new ideas into the associated academic topics,provide a new angle to the research of the translation of commentaries of national publicity films,and offer a reference to the promotion of translation for China’s global communication.This thesis aims to address the following three research questions: 1)What are the manifestations of intertextual strategies involved in translation for China’s global communication;2)How are the intertextual strategies adopted to achieve the pragmatic success of translation for China’s global communication? 3)What are the principles adopted by translators when applying intertextual strategies in translation for China’s global communication? With the purpose of comprehensively and specifically answering the above-mentioned three research questions,the thesis is dedicated to establishing an analytical framework of translation for China’s global communication based on Fairclough’s intertextuality theory;and to analyzing the patterns of intertextual strategies involved in the translation of commentaries of Perspective,illustrating the operational mechanism of the three intertextual strategies employed by translators in achieving the communicative functions of national publicity films,and to summarizing the principles for effectively employing intertextual strategies in translation for China’s global communication.Three major findings are achieved through the study.First,the three primary forms of intertextual strategies involved in the translation of commentaries of Perspective are manifest intertextual strategies,interdiscursive strategies,and multimodal intertextual strategies.Second,through the adoption of manifest intertextual strategies,the target texts are bound to the Chinese classics and social norms,expanding the target audiences’ acceptance of Chinese culture and creating a diverse and integrated China.The interdiscursive strategies can enable translators to break the limitation of time and space and blend the conventional elements of genres,discourses,or styles in the target texts,making the figures in Perspective livelier and delivering the Chinese language cultures and social norms in a more effective way.Multimodal intertextual strategies are capable of diversely and dimensionally conveying information,guaranteeing the effects of the translation of commentaries,and providing a true Chinese image to the target-language audience.The collective effect of the three intertextual strategies brings the pragmatic success of the target texts into a full realization.Third,it is essential that translators,when employing the intertextual strategies in the translation for China’s global communication,should follow the principle of audience-oriented rendering,principle of proper equivalence,and principle of flexible innovation,thus constructing complete and effective target texts,so as to be good tellers of Chinese stories and great messengers of a true,solid and rounded Chinese image.It is hoped that this study will provide some inspirations for the further study of translation for China’s global communication,and thus facilitate the international publicity of Chinese culture.
