Artists' Residency In Business,A Script For Imagination At Work

The "artist residency" by now has been well accepted as a mode of production of art.This development has went through a long transformation process both benefitting from the intellectual production of art theory,while being responsive to the both global and local economic and social context.In short,it is an artform that results from the work of art,and the "objecthood to the work of art" in its contextual responsiveness.Some might argue that the art model of "art residency" enhances and endows the artist with the image of being a carrier of social values,while also producing a kind of benign social cohesion.On the contrary,some other viewpoints may argue that "art residency is just a buffer to eliminate social conflicts and contradictions(such as the case of "art residency" that stimulates social conflicts in the renovation of SOHO district in Manhattan).Through a preliminary historical and contextual survey,we attempt to highlight the particularities of our subject:in this thesis,the aim is to use the first-hand information that the authors has collected in the Bernard Controls founded art residency,the Social Sensibility R&D,to conduct a case study.A residency located in another delocalized mode of production:the subsidiary of a French industrial company based in Beijing.This case study involves a new form of art that we might call,for now,"artists' residency in business".Although this study is only limited to the context of art practice in France and Europe,the author hopes to consider whether this new art form will bring a new impact and thinking to the art practice and industry in China,through the discussion in this paper.The choosing of the central case that,even if resulting from a European economic,social and cultural background,was firstly created and enacted in Beijing,also relates to the will of "entering the debate".The Chinese art industry is now launching closer cooperation and binding with the European Art Industry.In the actual international environment where cross-cultural contexts overlap,maybe this cooperation can foster localization through art practice.But as art practitioners,or art theorists,are we ready to face the rise of such a new form of art?What is the specificities of an artist residency in a company?This thesis will aim to critically expand and explore this scope,based on the reassessment of this first-hand information,in order to rethink how the concept of "script"enables "imagination" to work.
