Kang Youwei's study on Confucian classics and his calligraphic thoughts are the most important reform and legislation in the field of modern Chinese ideology and art.Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts integrate politics, academics, and literature as a whole, breaking through the barrier between art and ideology, and this is a research method in conformity with his calligraphic features.New text Confucianism is the key to understanding Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts. In Kang Youwei's new text Confucianism,Liu Xin's forgery of ancient characters in the pre-Qin Dynasty, the skepticism on ancient theory and Kang's view on ancient theory, inheritance and change, reform under the cover of antiquity,Literacy and Simplicity, tendency and axiom, thoughts on Great Harmony, etc.,have all directly influenced Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts. On the other hand, calligraphic thoughts became a means for Kang Youwei to verify Confucian classics and historical records, and media to place his ideal on Confucianism.Guang Yi Zhou Shuang Ji does not only belong to the field of calligraphy,it is also a masterpiece in the history of ideology and philosophy, which cannot be neglected in the tremendously changing structure in politics and culture in the late-Qing Dynasty.Kang Youwei's predominant thoughts are demonstrated in this masterpiece on calligraphic thoughts, therefore,a probe into Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts provides an important perspective for a thorough understanding of Kang Youwei the person. This paper aims at the interaction between Kang Youwei's study on Confucian classics and his calligraphic thoughts, examining his calligraphic thoughts as an integral part within his thought structure and its evolution, identifying the philosophical foundation and academic origin of his calligraphic thoughts, reflecting on the ideological value and influence of his calligraphic thoughts, reexamining the ideological foundation for the flourishing stele theory in the late-Qing Dynasty and the essence of the change in calligraphic theory between ancient and modern China. The thesis focuses on four issues that are advancing layer by layer. The first chapter discusses the relationship between calligraphic thoughts and Kang Youwei's turning of classics. The writing of Guang Yi Zhou Shuang Ji was just in time for Kang Youwei's turn of the Confucian classics,so the book has also become an important document for recording and observing this turn.Kang's even revised the first draft due to the desire to echo the classics concept,“Liu Xin's forgery of ancient characters in the pre-Qin Dynasty” is said to be added later.By comparing with Kang's early works such as Xin Xue Wei Jing Kao and other early works, you can examine this revision trace, understand the factual connection between Kang's calligraphic thoughts and Confucian classics, and also distinguish the “academic case” between Kang Youwei and Liao Ping.Provide some circumstantial evidence. The second chapter combs main content, methods and rationale of classics of Kang Youwei's calligraphy reform.“Inheritance and Change”,which is derived from Zhou Yi and Autumn Annals' Gong Yang Study,is the theoretical cornerstone of Kang Youwei's view on political and calligraphic reform.By means of image analysis and aesthetic synaesthesia,Kang Youwei identified the source and origin, and recounted the history of calligraphy.By means of discerning the thoughts and will and restoring the ancient Confucian wisdom,Kang Youwei sorted out and classified the sources and constructed calligraphic thoughts system.Returning to the ancient to reach the essence, reaching the essence to achieve reform, and promoting ideological emancipation and the rise of value, are the new approaches to developing both new text Confucianism and calligraphic thoughts in the late-Qing Dynasty. The third chapter reflects on the essence of Kang Youwei's calligraphy reform and the Qing Dynasty stele movement from the perspective of classics. The most significant impact of Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts on Chinese calligraphy is that they triggered and promoted the transformation of Chinese calligraphic thoughts from the ancient to the modern. He reexamined calligraphic trend from the perspective of Gong Yang Study and the theory of Literacy and Simplicity. With the old Confucianism, the new Confucianism, tablet calligraphy theory, and model calligraphy theory, and by means of respecting tablet calligraphy and deprecating model calligraphy,Kang Youwei changed the order of values and the evaluation criteria in calligraphy study based on the difference between elegancy and vulgarity,Cathay and barbarism,Chinese and Western.Kang Youwei's skepticism on ancient theories and the evolution in Confucianism enhanced the modernization of historiography, destroyed the foundation of faith on which classics depend, resulting in the internal division in calligraphic thoughts and the generalization of classics, reflecting the tension between the Ancient and the Modern,Confucian classics and Historiography,Politics and Academics. The fourth chapter starts from the spirit of applying knowledge in new text Confucianism, and analyzes the practical orientation of Kang's calligraphic thoughts and cultural and educational thoughts.Talking politics by means of examining academics is a common trait in Kang Youwei's new text Confucianism and calligraphic thoughts.Kang Youwei raised the everlasting value of Chinese calligraphy to a new level: studying art in the way of studying the world and elucidating civilization via calligraphic thoughts, belittling Tang Dynasty calligraphy while using regular script to recruit scholars, conducting humanistic cultivation through calligraphy education so as to make scholars more refined, which endows the classic Confucian calligraphic thoughts based on the principle of cultivating people with literature and refining souls with calligraphy, with new implication,so much as to cope with the change of the time. This also paved the way for political and sociological approaches in modern literature and art criticism.Calligraphy and astronomy are indispensable disciplines for Kang Youwei in the sophistication of his thought and the rise of his life realm, from statecraft to carefree attitude, from art to science, from the study of man to the study of nature, and the theory of Zhuang Zi in Gong Yang Study is just the link between those two disciplines.Through the study of Confucian classics,Kang Youwei related calligraphic thoughts to the reform in politics and ideology in the late-Qing Dynasty, changed the logic in the internal evolution of Chinese calligraphy, bringing about new problems as well as activating vigor.Like his study on Confucian classics,Kang Youwei's calligraphic thoughts are full of paradoxes of self-negation and self-subversion,demonstrating the complexity and predicament in the ideological transformation in China in the late-Qing Dynasty. It reminds us that we can have a better view of our time and the problems around us if we have a deeper understanding of and greater sympathy for those complex figures in history.
