The space writing in Dostoevsky's novels is a response, representation and reflection on modernity. This article starts from two perspectives: modernity as a background and modernity as an ideological tradition. It explains how Dostoevsky cultivated an unique concept of space in the background of modernity, and then transformed it into the imagery of space in his texts, thus completing the representation and reflection of modernity.First of all, from the perspective of Russia's modernization history,a distinctive feature of Russia 's pursuit of modernization, beginning with Peter the Great 's reform,is the change in the concept of space.Peter the Great's emphasis on the introduction of modern European cartography led to geographical surveys and survey records based on modern geodetic techniques throughout Russia, those movements directly changed people's space views at the time.It was on the basis of this modernized internalized space view that Dostoevsky completed the discovery of "internal landscape".Based on that, this paper discusses the principle of "image" refinement of artistic creation in his personal letters and some articles, explaining that in the field of space writing, the modern space concept of Dostoevsky determines the uniqueness of space writing's core elements. It is on the basis of the inner perception of space that Dostoevsky created his own space writing with the representation and reflection of modernity.Based on that, this paper takes St Petersburg writing in Dostoevsky's writing as the core element, and analyzes the pursuit of space form and the ideological representation behind it in this space writing. From site selection to construction,Petersburg as a city space itself is the result of Russia 's pursuit of modernity, and Dostoevsky 's Petersburg is based on this change and responds to and reflects on this change.Specifically, the nature of Petersburg as a city space determines its paradox.Although it is intended to build a city that is completely rational and orderly to conquer nature,Petersburg itself is a combination of multiple contradictions. In the natural environment,Petersburg has suffered from natural disasters because of its location, which directly endangers the lives of residents. At the same time, due to reforms at many levels including administration, taxation, culture and education, the residents of Petersburg have to put up with natural disasters and almost completely abandon traditional lifestyles to meet the European civilization advocated by the reform. All these contradictions make Petersburg not only a carrier for the rationalization and order of modernity, but also a carrier for the complexity,multi-dimensionality and even contradiction of modernity itself.Petersburg witnessed and characterized the paradox of the mechanism of modernity in a spatial way.It is in this sense that the significance of Petersburg text in Dostoevsky's writing becomes apparent, and the Petersburg space in Dostoevsky's pen in the Russian literary tradition has been changed at the same time,it records, represents and responds to modernity. In his revelation of the contradiction of modernity inherent in Petersburg's city space,he discovered the paradox of modernity. In addition to Petersburg's city space writing,Dostoevsky's natural space writing is also a part of his spatial reflection on modernity.According to the researches of related scholars,in the history of Russian culture, the presentation of natural space has always been closely related to the construction of nationality, aesthetics and modernity. In Dostoevsky's works,Dostoevsky first transformed the natural space into literary imagery in his writings by the internalized spatial perception discussed above. On this basis, the natural space writing in Dostoevsky's writing has become a symbol of the pursuit of redemption, which continues the spiritual exploration represented in the writing of city space.More importantly, just as his city space is multi-dimensional,his writing of natural space also presents a complex dimension.Specifically,Dostoevsky's natural space writing is an attempt of the writer himself to construct a redemption between Orthodox tradition and modernity experience. It is against this complex background that we are able to observe the writer's own reflection more abundantly. After rethinking the natural space writing of Dostoevsky,we will find the modernity dilemma that Dostoevsky has encountered in the proposition of redemption.Based on that, this article believes that in the knowledge of the context of modernity and the search for a way to represent belief,Dostoevsky fell into the paradox of representation. In the end, this article turns the perspective on thinking of the way of spatial writing chosen by Dostoevsky in this representational paradox. In this part, this article returns to the first chapter on the relationship between Dostoevsky and the modern space concept brought by Russian modernity geography, and explains the text in which the writing of the city space of Petersburg and the natural space of Russia. We will find two completely different ways of writing space, and the difference between the two is the deliberate transformation of Dostoevsky's modern space perception method constructed by modern geography.Specifically,Dostoevsky depicts the city space of Petersburg as a map-like space in a spatially-perceived manner following modern geography, while he describes the natural space as a representation of the sacred landscape in his work.It is depicted as a vague, abstract orthodox iconic space.More importantly,Petersburg is a terrifying landscape, but the abstract nature has brought the so-called "real" salvation of his characters. In this context,Dostoevsky's spatial writing has become a paradox of redemption as both a question and a method. On the one hand, the significant difference between urban space and natural space has become a manifestation of the ambiguity of Dostoevsky's religious thoughts in space, but on the other hand,it is in this concrete and abstract, precise and vague contrast,Dostoevsky completed the return to the "silence" advocated in the Orthodox apophatic theology and hesychasm, just as Jesus who was silent in the "Religious Lord" section of Brother Karamazov. In this dimension,we can say that Dostoevsky became a person who deliberately used paradoxes. He used paradoxes as a method of expression in his spatial writing, thus completing what he had thought about all his life:the dilemma of sacred presentation in the modern context.
