Time and space are the research objects of philosophers for a long time, but space has not been paid the same attention as time in the research process. It was not until the "spatial turn" in western academic circles officially kicked off and promoted the interdisciplinary research of space theory that people really paid attention to space.Under the background of Economic Reform and opening up,China’s urban spaces have undergone earth-shaking changes, which makes space enter people’s research horizon. Some scholars have gradually applied space theory to text analysis, and began to attach importance to the "space form" in literature and analyze the meaning behind its description. With the continuous advancement of urbanization, the production mode has gradually changed in cities, and the consumption culture has become popular, which has also brought about the changes and restructuring of urban space. This is particularly evident in Shanghai. On the one hand,Shanghai is synonymous with bustling modern fashion, with bustling streets and towering skyscrapers everywhere. On the other hand, the city still retains the urban space of old Shanghai, such as alley space. In the drastic urban changes, people will feel confused and lonely. The existence of alley space can not only soothe loneliness, but also make people remember the past.Writers are also people in urban space.Facing the changes of cities, writers express this psychological experience of cities concretely through literary creation. This also reflects the writer’s thinking about the existence of people living in urban space and his concern about the anxiety of people’s existence in the process of modernization.Based on the spatial theory and the literary works written in Shanghai in the 1920 s and 1930 s,this paper makes an overall observation and concrete analysis from the texts and aesthetic psychology of Mao Dun,Zhang Ailing and Wang Anyi.Mainly from the following aspects, the introduction part introduces the background significance of the topic selection, and classifies and summarizes the previous research results. The first chapter starts from the research history of spatial concept, combs the formation process of spatial theory, introduces the influence of spatial turn and the spatial theories of Lefebvre,Suja and Jameson, which provide theoretical basis for the following analysis. The second chapter starts with the description of space in literature, and takes the typical spaces in the works of Mao Dun,Zhang Ailing and Wang Anyi as the analysis objects, such as the residence written by Mao Dun,the ballroom written by Zhang Ailing and the alley written by Wang Anyi,so as to explore the meaning behind the description of space in literary works and reveal the survival reflection of writers under the background of modern existence. The third chapter focuses on exploring other spaces in the text, such as gender space and rural space, enriching the value of space description in the text and linking it with the urban-rural relationship in modern society. The conclusion summarizes the full text, pointing out that urban space is the product of the process of modernity, and we should treat and accept it objectively.
