The Outline of the National Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development Plan(2010-2020)calls for “cultivating a large number of international talents with an international perspective,being familiar with international rules,and able to participate in international affairs and international competition.” English application ability is one of the basic conditions that international talents should have,and tertiary English curricula play a major role in the cultivation and improvement of university undergraduate students' English ability.It is of great significance for undergraduates to participate in global governance,to become international talents and to develop in an all-round way.Based on this,on the one hand,tertiary English course is for the needs of national development strategy,as well as the needs of national reform and opening up and economic and social development.At the same time,it also has important practical significance and long-term impact on the future development of undergraduate students.The value of tertiary English curriculum lies in helping undergraduates to master English as a tool,which not only meets the actual life and academic needs,but also concerns the future development of undergraduate students.Therefore,the orientation of tertiary English curriculum is practical application,and its main task is to cultivate students' ability to use English,which is based on the situation or field(register)of language use.Academic English teaching is a kind of language teaching based on subject content.This teaching model,which combines subject knowledge learning with language knowledge learning,is conducive to enhancing undergraduates' learning interest and motivation,promoting students' autonomous learning,improving their language application ability,and promoting the growth of subject knowledge,and ultimately through the training and development of critical thinking,the innovation ability of undergraduate students will be improved.However,the effectiveness of academic English teaching in China's colleges and universities lacks real empirical research,and classroom teaching lacks effective practical exploration.Therefore,the practical value,application value and effectiveness of the academic English curriculum and teaching are a series of issues to be discussed in this study.Based on the curriculum theory,teaching theory,learning theory and language teaching theory,this study analyzes the related issues in the design of academic English reading curriculum for undergraduates in China,In particular,field investigations and classroom observations were carried out on the academic English reading course for medical undergraduates.Then,from the perspectives of reflecting and influencing undergraduates' academic needs analysis,the development of academic English ability and the factors of academic English classroom teaching,it discusses how to construct a curriculum design model of academic English reading,and puts forward the concrete principle.The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of providing undergraduates with the opportunity to develop research knowledge of professional development in tertiary English curriculum,and to explore the potential methods to encourage the development of research-related attributes,and some suggestions on how to teach and evaluate academic research skills in the curriculum.In the face of the universality of higher education curriculum teaching,the importance and necessity of attaching importance to the concept of particularity in English teaching are explored.This dissertation is divided into seven chapters.Chapter One mainly introduces the research background,research significance and value,research focus,difficulty and innovation,and the main structure of the detailed dissertation;Chapter Two is a literature review of this study.It mainly defines the terms of academic English teaching concepts in the field of higher education,and makes a comprehensive and systematic review of the existing researches on academic English related topics in the domestic academic community in recent years;Chapter Three uses the theoretical schema to analyze the essential elements of curriculum design and curriculum map,and further explains the academic English curriculum design from theoretical frameworks such as social constructivism,Bloom's goal classification and language curriculum design model.On the basis of relevant factors,the principles of academic English curriculum design are put forward;Chapter Four mainly explains and analyzes the design of this study;Chapter Five is the analysis of the elements of the academic English reading curriculum design and the case study of the curriculum design;Chapter Six describes and analyzes the teaching practice of academic English reading for medical undergraduates;Chapter Seven is the conclusion and enlightenment of this study.Taking into account the scope of this study and the attributes and characteristics of curriculum design as a research variable,this study mainly adopts the case study method of qualitative analysis.Based on the analysis of the course text and classroom observations,combined with relevant literature research,the classroom observation dimension is designed,and the real events in the academic English reading teaching in Chinese colleges and universities are analyzed from a micro perspective.By approaching,experiencing,understanding and interacting with the research objects,we can gain an interpretive understanding of its behavior and meaning construction.This study identified the “English Academic Journal Research Articles Reading” for medical undergraduates as an example of the curriculum design,using educational theories,curriculum map and curriculum design situational model in curriculum theory,and language curriculum design related theories,to analyze the curriculum design of academic English reading.With reference to the basic structure of typical international academic journal articles and the standards of medical academic English,the principles of academic English curriculum design are discussed,combined with specific cases.The results show that undergraduates have higher demand and satisfaction with academic English reading courses,and have a deeper understanding of the nature of professional communication,and have a more updated understanding of the strategies and academic fields of academic reading.The academic English reading curriculum helps undergraduates better enter the field of academic research preparation and empowerment.This dissertation analyzes the academic English classroom and teaching examples,probes into the evaluation criteria and concrete implementation process of academic English curriculum,and discusses the classroom teaching of academic English courses for undergraduates in combination with the specific situation in the natural environment of classroom teaching.Some suggestions are provided for curriculum design and model construction of the academic English curriculum.On the basis of expounding the principles of academic English curriculum design,the research scope is extended to the study of medical academic English reading in the foreign language classroom environment(situation).Aiming at the teaching practice and research of academic English curriculum,based on the classroom teaching environment of foreign language learning for undergraduates,the idea of constructing the teaching environment of academic English reading curriculum is proposed.This dissertation analyzes the real events in academic English reading curriculum and teaching in one of Chinese colleges and universities from a micro perspective,and explores the application of the natural state analysis method from the perspective of problems in the design and research of academic English curriculum.The collected data are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively,and the original research data are presented one by one in appendix.Therefore,there are different degrees of innovation and expansion in research perspective and research methods.At the same time,we try to use a variety of theories to analyze the design of academic English reading curriculum in Chinese university,and use discourse text analysis,classroom observation,action research,ethnography and phenomenology and other research methods and methodology to deconstruct the academic English teaching mode as "pre-class preparation—classroom presentation—after class consolidation.Based on the analysis of the theme and content of the research,this study further develops the concepts of academic English and academic English curriculum,and improves the theory of academic English curriculum design.Through relevant empirical research,it analyzes different aspects of curriculum,teaching,evaluation and assessment.This dissertation analyzes the problems and current situation of undergraduates' academic English curriculum design from the perspectives of curriculum,teaching,assessment and evaluation.However,this study needs to be further expanded in terms of the diversity and scale of the samples,and the comparative research on the design of academic English curriculums at home and abroad needs to be further deepened.In addition,this study attempts to incorporate practical issues into a broad theoretical perspective,which is basically consistent with the advocacy of classroom practitioners to participate in the process of curriculum theory construction.However,the proposed curriculum design model and principles of academic English reading are still an attempt.Further discussion on the application of natural state analysis in the research of academic English curriculum design will help solve the practical problems encountered in the development of academic English courses and academic English teaching in Chinese colleges and universities,and it is conducive to promoting the sound development of academic English teaching and tertiary English curriculum research in China.The design of academic English courses for undergraduates in China is a complex and multi-dimensional task.For each principle discussed in this dissertation,it is also a common problem and dilemma faced by curriculum designers and practitioners.Any aspect on these topics will influence the entire process.This dissertation attempts to cover the prominent elements of the process,including the curriculum,teaching,evaluation and assessment,which are closely related to the content of this study.At the same time,the curriculum syllabus,curriculum objective,curriculum content,curriculum materials,curriculum evaluation and assessment in the curriculum design are summarized around a series of research contents and findings of this study,and the future research is prospected and further expanded.It is suggested that the research level should be expanded and the quality of academic English curriculums should be improved to promote the development of academic English competence of Chinese undergraduates.
