Luo Pin,a painter in the Qing Dynasty and the bellwether of the eight distinctive painters in Yangzhou, was famous for his unique style of figure painting and was sought after by many literati painters at that time and later. The current review said that "Mr.Weng was the leading to write poetry in the north and Luo Pin was the first to draw in the south",which showed his reputation.Throughout his life,Luo Pin was full of complexity and contradiction, which was caused by the multiplicity of his self-identity construction. On the one hand,Luo Pin's birth, growth, the pursuit of fame and wealth and indifference to life were the process of his identity construction.Luo Pin,just like a director, consciously constructed different identities to deal with various problems at different stages of life,From the perspective of zhengxinlu in his later years, this was the collection of life experiences of the so-called "incarnation",and this works was no longer a summary of Luo Pin's superstitious thoughts, but the evidence and interpretation of the process of constructing his identity in his life.Various identities of literati, painters, celebrities and hermits were intertwined with Luo Pin,and he worked hard for each identity.Literati and painter had become the tools for him to obtain the identity of celebrities and the medium for him to express the thought of hermits. On the other hand, figure painting was not only Luo Pin's specialty, but also an important means for him to construct his identity with others.By creating figure paintings,Luo Pin not only gained a reputation for him,but also expressed the religious concept of "incarnation".This idea was also consistently expressed in the portrait works made for others. Therefore,Luo Pin was very unusual to go against the tradition of ancient Chinese portrait painting, and expanded the space between the form and spirit as much as possible through the pursuit of the form of the owner's image. The ownership of each portrait works also changed from the image of the owner to Luo Pin's,both in spirit and in practicality.Gods, ghosts and Buddha statues were also the main themes of Luo Pin's creations, but the images he depicted were not as inhumane as tradition, but as human as people in the world."Guiqutu" is famous all over the world, but the vivid images of ghosts may be taken from the images of deformed clowns used for fun at Salt Merchants' banquets. The Buddha statues also do not have the sense of being superior, but are similar to ordinary people in distress. Some images were even directly chosen from the appearance of someone who sponsored Luo Pin.This modeling technique was not done by Luo pin at will, which implied his so-called "incarnation" concept. Therefore, the problem of identity construction is an unavoidable topic in the study of Luo Pin and his figure painting. This paper makes an in-depth study on the identity construction in Luo Pin and his figure paintings from the perspectives of sociology, iconology, formal analysis and history.
