This dissertation conducts a systematic research from a historical perspective on the international organizations in the Middle East. The Middle East has always been the target of west powers and was forced to involve into the international organizations launched by Europe in the 19 th century. That caused the Middle East one of the earliest areas where international organizations emerged. The Middle East is a region where the international organizations work actively, which could be reflected from the first global intergovernmental international organization---the League of Nations to the United Nations as well as the League of Arab States, the Organization of Petroleum Export Countries,Gulf Cooperation Council and Organization of Islamic Cooperation and etc. There are, therefore, academic and practical values to do the research on the international organizations in the Middle East. This topic takes the Yearbook of International Organizations published by Union of International Associations(UIA)as the research instrument. The key words such as Arab,Muslim,Middle East,Islamic,Jewish,Zion and etc.as well as the titles of 22 Arab countries and 5 countries as Turkey,Iran,Israel,Afghanistan,Cyprus and their capitals were indexed among the 69862 officially registered international organizations in the UIA.There were 976 international organizations from the index. The author also studied the archives, books, websites and references to sort out the activities of global international organizations in the Middle East. The research was carried on the corpus derived from the above resources. The dissertation consists of four parts including the Preface, the Text, the Conclusion and the Appendix. The Preface introduces the reason why this topic is selected as well as its meaning. The current study of this topic at home and abroad is also introduced. There are four chapters in the part of the Text. The first chapter discussed the emergence, evolution, classification and distribution of the international organizations in the Middle East.Under the influence of western culture,European international organizations and the establishment of nation-state system in the Middle East, the international organizations came into being. As per the popular classification of international organizations, this research classified the international organizations as Global Intergovernmental Organizations,Regional Intergovernmental Organizations,Global Nongovernmental Organizations and Regional Nongovernmental Organizations. The second chapter was focused on the history of intergovernmental organizations in the Middle East.To be specific, the intergovernmental organizations were subclassified into global intergovernmental organizations and regional intergovernmental organizations. The League of Nations, the United Nations, the Non-aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation were studied as examples of global intergovernmental organizations in the political, economic, educational, cultural and other affairs.European Union,Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries,North Atlantic Treaty Organization and African Union were studied as examples of regional intergovernmental organizations in the interaction with the Middle East area. The League of Arab States,Gulf Cooperation Council of Arab States and Arab Maghreb Union were studied as examples of intergovernmental organizations originated from this region. The third chapter studied the evolution of nongovernmental organizations in the Middle East. After the Cold War,a large number of nongovernmental organizations came out and become the outstanding figures on the Middle East stage.Having provided great assistance for the governments and institutions in the Middle East, the nongovernmental organizations were strictly restricted due to their dispute in ideology and democracy. There should be a long way to go for the international nongovernmental organizations. The fourth chapter summarized the characteristics of the international organizations in the Middle East. The global intergovernmental organizations in the Middle East have developed a complete governance system and are now becoming more outstanding in dealing with the Middle East problems. The intergovernmental organizations launched by the Middle East countries seemed to have more contradiction and dispute. It is difficult to have a united force for them. While the international nongovernmental organizations still have a long way to go.The conclusion part presents a generalization of the history of international organizations in the Middle East.It finds out that the involvement of governance by the international organizations, either the intergovernmental organizations or the international nongovernmental organizations, has a close relation with the development of politics, economy, culture and etc.in the Middle East as well as the world situations. The international organizations will reform further in the Middle East with the change of the geopolitical situations. They are expected to play more important parts in this area in future. The bibliography part lists the 976 international organizations in the Middle East area which officially registered at the Union of International Association.Audience and researchers could index the time of founding of these international organizations as well as their headquarters, which may provide with more general features and detailed information. This part also produces the abbreviations of the English titles of the international organizations mentioned in this dissertation and some of their major activities with the purpose to accumulate reference for future study.
