The subject of this dissertation is focused on the issue of Jewish settlements in the West Bank amid the territorial disputes between Palestine and Israel. In the Six-Day War of 1967,Israel captured the West Bank and established settlements in this area, which triggered a series of violent conflicts between Palestine and Israel.Israel's military occupation and settlement policy in the West Bank have exerted a profound and lasting impact on the geopolitics of the Middle East, and have become one of the key obstacles to the Israeli-Palestinian peace progress.Hence, not only does this issue turn into one of the focuses of international politics,it has also remained as one of the hot spots in the study of the Middle East, especially the Palestine-Israel conflict.Based on active learning from the existing significant international and domestic researches, and centered on Israel's activities in the occupied Jewish settlements in the West Bank following the Six-Day War,this paper focuses on three important related issues-the formulation of the Israeli Government's policy on the West Bank, violent conflicts between Palestine and Israel over the Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and multiple levels of international and domestic checks and balances on Israel's activities over the Jewish settlements in the West Bank.Meanwhile, this paper reveals the international debate on the legitimacy of the territories under Israel's control by selecting the research results of several important international scholars. In the process of elaborating the above questions, this paper strives to manifest two significant aspects simultaneously existing in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship,by adopting the research path of ‘conflict and multiple checks and balances'-First,factors of conflicts, including religious conflicts, ethnic conflicts and military conflicts involved in territorial disputes; On the other hand, factors of checks and balances in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship. These factors of checks and balances are three-tiered:international,regional and domestic. They are reflected on-military,political and legal aspects, economical, social and cultural aspects,as well as ethical and moral aspects. The core conclusions of this paper are as follows: In the territorial disputes over the West Bank between Palestine and Israel, checks and balances from various tiers and multiple aspects have exerted vitally essential restraining effect on violent conflicts between Palestine and Israel.Under such effect, the West Bank violent conflict was relegated from high-intensity,large-scale military warfare,to low-intensity,small-scale violent conflict,if not non-military conflict. This conflict is a remnant of war, thus should be viewed as high-intensity crime activities instead of low-intensity warfare and makes it possible to be dealt with public security and judicialization.Nevertheless,it is inevitable that a multiple-factored,compound path should be taken in order for the Israeli-Palestinian relationship to grow from conflicting to peaceful and friendly.Joint efforts from international society,Middle East and Israel itself are required, combined with legal, political, economical and ethic factors.
