Research On Early Architectural Complex Of Wuhan University(1928-1937)

Taking the early architectural complex of Wuhan University(1928-1937)as the research object,a study on modern historical architectural complex was performed.The decade of 1927-1937 is a key stage in the modernization of Chinese architecture.The relatively stable social environment provides an opportunity for the development of the construction industry.From 1928 to 1937,a large-scale and lasting campus construction of Wuhan University has been launched from scratch,including the site selection,architectural design and building construction.This construction activity is a beneficial attempt for traditional Chinese architecture stepping into the architectural modernization,and a brilliant star of modern Chinese architecture history.From the perspective of construction,the history and evolution of the built environment of the early architectural complex of Wuhan University were mainly investigated in this paper.Historical materials were obtained through literature mining,interviews and field research,and the research was conducted through analysis,mutual verification,comparison and induction.Construction traits of early architectural complex of Wuhan University were obtained from multiple historical perspectives,including site selection and planning,design process,building construction and trait induction.The construction process of early architectural complex was clarified but not limited in the perspective of architectural design.Besides designer,construction method and luminescent spots which were ignored in historical development,influencing factors on the construction of the early architectural complex were also analyzed,including the discourse power of the design subject in construction activities,influence of the administrative policy,economic support,construction organization system.The early architectural complex of Wuhan University was treated as a multiple organic integrity to reveal construction history,constructiontraits and historical connotation in modern times,and its position in the modernizationdevelopment of modern Chinese architecture was determined.In this way,the general and fallacious judgment on the history and evolution of the early architectural complex of Wuhan University is revised,and the research on education architecture,especially on the early architectural complex of Wuhan University,is supplemented.Firstly,the previous research results were combed;and the specific research object,research methods,basis and purpose were determined.Secondly,the construction process of the early architectural complex of Wuhan University was analyzed from four aspects:(1)The history of site selection and planning evolution.The policy,economic and other influencing factors were analyzed;five changes of site selection,four planning concepts and three planning layouts were proposed as the research basis for the following study;(2)According to the archives and design drawings,the design process of the early architectural complex of Wuhan University was divided into two stages.Besides Francis Henry Kales(1882-1957),the architectural design and structural design,which were conducted byPoy Gum Lee(1900-1968),Richard Sachse(1882-1966),Hemmings&berkley and Abraham Lewenspiel(1899-1984),were obtained,which complemented the previous research on architects and structural engineers.Additionally,the effort of design team for exploring the integration of Chinese and Western architectural forms,building technology,especially roof truss engineering,were highlighted;(3)The construction process of early architectural complex was studied.Engineering bidding,construction preparation and construction process of early buildingswere sorted out according to the design drawings,contract,relevant construction documents and correspondence.It wasfound that this construction process was a significant exploration in the standardization of Chinese modern architectural documents and legalization of the relationship between construction organizations,which effectively promoted the modernization of Chinese modern architecture.(4)The comparative study on the campus value form,spatial layout and architectural form with other campuses in the same period were carried out,and construction traits of the early building group of Wuhan University were summarized.It mainly reflected in the multi-core and three-dimensional space layout of centripetal pattern,eclectic architectural form between ChineseandWestern,diversified and innovative architectural technology,and modern construction organization system.(5)Conclusion and prospect.The historical connotation of the early architectural complex of Wuhan university was determined through the research on the construction of the early architectural complex of Wuhan university,so as to elaborate its promoting role in the modernization of traditional Chinese architecture and its limitations.In a word,the construction process of the early architectural complex of Wuhan University is a powerful exploration in the modernization of Chinese traditional architecture,and its attempts have an enlightenment significance for the regional research of Chinese architecture today.
