| Nanjing, with a history of nearly 2,600 years as an established city, enjoys the reputation of“Capital of Six Dynasties and Metropolis of Ten Dynasties".Since there are few historical relics of the Southern Tang Dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom,it is generally believed that the ancient capital outlooks of Nanjing are mainly composed of those of the Six Dynasties period(222-589)between Han and Tang, the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644),and the Republic of China(1912-1949).The majestic Ming city walls and the scattered Minguo-era buildings have preserved the historical memories and city features of the Ming Dynasty and the Republic of China. However,it is unfortunate that Nanjing, with its prestigious historical reputation, has relatively few comprehensive presentations of its tangible historical heritage.Practical reasons include the inevitable fading-away of dynastic styles throughout historical changes, serious damages due to frequent wars, and difficulty of thorough excavation due to the chronologically multiple-layered feature of Nanjing’s ancient capital vestiges. The Six Dynasties,as an important historical period of Chinese ethnic fusion, have left Nanjing with opulent cultural, historical, technological, and artistic heritage.Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, numerous scholars have made detailed investigations of the relics of the Six Dynasties in Nanjing. In the past 100 years, considerable outstanding scholars, represented by Mr.Zhu Xie and Mr.Jiang Zanchu, have filled the vacancies in the study of the Six Dynasties history and the local history of Nanjing through field works, archaeological excavations and theoretical studies. These studies provided rich historical and archaeological foundations for the contemporary representations of the Six Dynasties in Nanjing.Based on previous studies, this paper firstly conducts a targeted sorting and authentication of the cultural heritage that embody the style of the Six Dynasties in Nanjing. In view of Nanjing’s existent preservations and remains, the author categorizes the relics into three types:historical relics of the deeply buried capital city of Nanjing, historical relics in the surrounding area of the capital city of Nanjing, and the mausoleums as well as burial sites scattered in the suburbs of Nanjing.Secondly,in consideration of the current situations of the display of Nanjing’s Six Dynasties’cultural heritage, the presentations of its ancient-capital style can be described as possessing the highlights of "the urban pattern of the Ming Dynasty and the architecture style of the Republic of China".On this basis, the author creatively proposes the concept of“Six Dynasties embellishment",which aims to organically fuse the Six Dynasties style into Nanjing’s existing ancient capital style.Together, they constitute an overall pattern that integrates "the urban pattern of the Ming Dynasty, the architecture style of the Republic of China, and the embellishment of the Six Dynasties".Thirdly, after reviewing and extracting the preservation theories of historical and cultural cities, the author draws on a preservation theory named "urban historical landscape" and proposes the essential display pattern of“Six Dynasties Urban District",which takes into the types of cultural heritage of the Six Dynasties and the current urban outlooks of Nanjing.Accordingly, the derived concept of "thematic representations of cultural landscapes of the Six Dynasties" intends to create three dimensions displaying Nanjing’s historical landscapes, cultural landscape, and museum display, such as representation of ancient urban style, preservation and utilization of historical relics, and virtualized digital reproduction, with an aim to comprehensively inherit the cultural heritage of the Six Dynasties and renew Nanjing’s urban cultural identities, and promote the harmonious coexistence of the historical and modern features of Nanjing. |
