Ernst Faber(1839-1899),a German Protestant missionary, was known as "the most accomplished Scholar of Chinese studies" in late Qing Dynasty.Due to his low-key personality,he stayed away from politics, did not make friends with the royal family and nobles, and had no famous followers.Although he wrote a lot of books,he was highly praised. And he has played a certain impact to China’s politics, education. But his reputation in history is not well known, and his ideas have not been studied much.At present, most of the researches on Ernst Faber in domestic and abroad are still in the stage of historical discussion and evaluation of the contribution to the cultural exchange between China and the West, and there is a lack of overall research on how Ernst Faber communicates with Confucianism.Such a research situation makes the topic of this paper has a certain academical value. The mutual interpretation of Confucianism and Christianity is the core idea to grasp Ernst Faber’s bridging Confucianism and Christianity.Mutual interpretation means interpreting Confucianism with Christianity and Interpreting Christianity with Confucianism. Here,Hermeneutics is certainly involved.Western hermeneutics has been an exegesis since its birth.Since Max Muller put forward the concept of religion, religion has developed into a variety of subjects.Although religious hermeneutics is an academic concept in the modern and contemporary sense,Ernst Faber has supplemented and revised Max Muller’s religion teaching by combining religion with hermeneutics, thus forming the shadow of religious hermeneutics initially. From the perspective of religious hermeneutics, every religion has its own hermeneutics.Catherine Cornille, chair of the Theology department at Boston College, advocates interreligious hermeneutics. You Bin,a professor of Minzu University of China, believes that a reciprocal interreligious hermeneutics should be moved towards. Before constructing the interreligious hermeneutics of mutual interpretation of Confucianism, the first principle to be established is the religious nature of Confucianism.Ernst Faber believes that Confucianism is a combination of religion and secularity. The concept of interreligious hermeneutics has been constructed by Ernst Faber’s speech at the World Conference of Religions held in Chicago in 1893.This paper argues that Ernst Faber’s interreligious hermeneutics is a trinity that combines hermeneutics, comparative theology and comparative religion. Therefore, based on the western hermeneutics and comparative religion as theoretical guidance, the application of relevant concepts of hermeneutics and the methodology of comparative religion, such as "localization","the other","mutually interpretation","hermeneutic circle" and "comparison",trying to make interreligious hermeneutics of Confucian school of orientation and connotation as a starting point. This paper makes a case study of the great missionary and The Western Confucian scholar on his attitude towards the religious issues of Confucianism and the dialectical attitude towards the Confucian texts,as well as the interreligious hermeneutics of the Confucian concept of "heaven"," universe" and "ethics".It provides a meaningful case for studying cognitive attitude, hermeneutics method, and correlation judgment for missionaries in late Qing Dynasty, and provides a longitudinal and horizontal, macro and micro study case for comparing religion. The first chapter mainly establishes the religiosity of Confucianism. The basic premise of interreligious interpretation is the encounter between religions and the interpretation of one religion to another, that is,to establish whether Confucianism is a religion or not.In 1873,Max Muller published “Introduction to the science of religion”,and in the same year,Ernst Faber published “Introduction to the science of Chinese religion(German edition),subtitled a Critique on Max Muller and other authors,as a response to Muller’s religion.Ernst Faber,as a missionary, standing on the point of the Christian religion, judging Muller’s point of view, his position is Christian theology, but Ernst Faber did not deny Muller of religion,he carried on the practice of both comparative theology and comparative religion.Looking at Confucianism from the perspective of religion,it can be seen that Confucianism responds to every topic.Confucianism in the eyes of Ernst Faber is the combination of religion and secularity. The second chapter mainly discusses the construction of the interreligious hermeneutics of Ernst Faber. From the appearance and development of hermeneutics, hermeneutics has always been closely connected with Christian religion. The tradition of Western hermeneutics is mainly established in the history of biblical interpretation, which is a kind of exegesis of biblical texts.Schleiermacher divides hermeneutic methodological rules into semantics and psychology. In order to know the basic orientation of the mutual interpretation of Ernst Faber. It is a comparison from the perspective of semantics and a dialectic from the perspective of psychology.Schleiermacher also believes that hermeneutics has three interests: historical interest, artistic interest and speculative interest. From this point of view, the connotation of Ernst Faber’s interests also includes three aspects: localization, mutual interpretation and interpretation cycle.Ernst Faber’s interreligious hermeneutics, through dialogue between Confucianism and Christianity, had criticism, traceability, extension and debate, embodied the dialectical process of text interpretation, unity of opposites, mutual transformation,is the combination of epistemology and dialectics. From the late Ming Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty, the changing image of Confucianism in the eyes of missionaries, and the controversy over the missionary route in the late Qing Dynasty-the dispute between the route of James Hudson Taylor and Timothy Richard-and the comparison between Ernst Faber and Matteo Ricci, embody the theory of the Other, the theory of the interpretive cycle and the theory of the fusion of horizons in hermeneutics. The core of this paper, chapters 3,4,and 5,use hermeneutic theory to specifically interpret relationship between heaven, earth, and man.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the mutual interpretation of Di Lun.Cosmology includes three aspects: metaphysical and ontological, emphasizing the creation of the universe; At the level of values,it emphasizes man’s attitude towards the universe and nature. The third is the level of behavior norms, emphasizing the relationship between human and the universe and nature. This paper discusses the interreligious interpretation of Ernst Faber’s cosmological view of Confucianism from the perspective of creation of the universe--origin and creation, how to understand the universe and nature--objects and knowledge, and how to coordinate the relationship between man and the universe--the unity of heaven and man and the unity of god and man.The fifth chapter mainly discusses the Mutual interpretation of Ren Lun.Ethics is the moral relationship and code of conduct between people. Both of them discussed the good and evil of human nature, love and fraternity, five and heaven, and how people have ethics and need to be educated.Chapter six mainly discusses the significance and limitations of the interreligious interpretation of Ernst Faber. It is of great significance to the sinicization of Christian religion,to the dialogue between religions and civilizations,to the study of Chinese and Western classics,to the development of religious education,to the universalism of religion, and to the historical limitations of the cross-religious interpretation of Ernst Faber. This paper argues that the mutual interpretation of Confucianism in Ernst Faber is a kind of religious dialogue.Religious dialogue is the encounter and understanding between religions. How each religion maintains its own uniqueness while maintaining the maximum good for others is the eternal subject of religious dialogue. The study of religious dialogue has both theoretical and practical significance. No matter how times change, the discussion of heaven, earth and man will never be out of date. The dialogue in the Ernst Faber provides a perspective for the mutual integration and reference of religion and civilization.
